Designing the Sour Jacks® Experience

Sour Jacks® isn’t just candy; it’s a mouth-puckering, sweet-and-sour thrill ride in a uniquely wedge-shaped package. When tasked with redesigning this website, our team set out to capture the same playful, bold, and unforgettable essence of their brand.

The new site had to be dynamic, memorable, and just as "sour" as the product itself—leaving visitors with an impression so strong that they’d instantly think of Sour Jacks® every time they see those tangy candies on a store shelf.

Bold Flavors, Bold Visuals

Our approach was daring from the start—creating an online experience that felt as immersive as biting into Sour Jacks®’ chewy wedges. Like the candy, the design is an explosion of hues, flavor, and interactivity.

The dimly lit background serves as the perfect stage for the vibrant colors of Sour Jacks®, making every candy pop off the screen in a neon burst. Animated titles shift and morph as users navigate the site. Transformations and parallax effects add a layer of excitement, keeping users hooked as they scroll deeper into the experience. And the glitches? They’re not just for show—they’re part of the site’s modern, edgy vibe, blending a sense of digital chaos with a cool, nostalgic throwback to retro gaming.

The Wow Factor

What sets the Sour Jacks® website apart is the sheer level of detail in the design. We didn’t just stop at standard visuals; we brought the product packaging to life in 3D, adding lighting effects and animations that make the product spin, pop, and practically jump off the screen. This level of visual richness elevates the candy from just a snack to something almost tangible.

Gamifying the Experience

Our primary audience? Gen Z. And not just any Gen Z-ers, but gamers. This is a generation that wants to define itself, and we wanted to give them the platform to do just that. We wanted to speak their language, tap into their nostalgia for pixelated games, and offer a site experience that would make them want to engage with Sour Jacks® on an almost addictive level.

We introduced a "Play Mode," where site visitors transition into active participants. Suddenly, scrolling transforms into a “Pac-Man”-style game, with the iconic lips mascot chasing candy through a maze-like adventure. It’s a clever nod to the gaming culture that drives so much of the Sour Jacks® fan base.

But we didn’t stop there. The entire site is gamified. To mess with users, the navigation menu is tucked away on the right side and is not your typical, boring menu. Instead, it’s covered in glitch effects, adding a “something’s broken, but in a cool way” vibe. It keeps visitors on their toes—you don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Why is this important? Because a memorable website experience creates lasting brand recognition. When Sour Jacks® consumers stand in the checkout line, looking at rows of candy, we want the website experience to come to mind. A site that is as fun, bold, and distinctive as Sour Jacks® will stick with users, driving them back to the product every time. And it’s not just about a sale—it’s about creating a brand connection that feels personal.

Creating the "Way of the Wedge"

A big part of the Sour Jacks® identity is the brand’s manifesto, "The Way of the Wedge." This philosophy speaks to the rebels, trendsetters, and originals who embrace the sour as a way of life. We crafted a narrative that resonates with this audience, using copywriting and branding to tell this story loud and clear.

From the vibrant language to the call-to-action messaging, every word on the site speaks directly to the Sour Jacks® audience: those ready to embrace the unexpected. This brand narrative informed everything from the wireframe to the site’s sitemap down to the menu.

The “Where to Buy?” page is designed as a treasure hunt, guiding users to real-time locations where they can snag Sour Jacks based on their geolocation.

We also introduced an exclusive "Join the Jacks" signup club, creating a sense of mystique for visitors who want to be part of the Sour Jacks® community. This section is about more than signing up for a newsletter; it’s about joining a movement.

And, of course, we couldn’t forget the social feed—user-generated content keeps the community involved and the energy flowing #SpotTheSour.
