Creating a website for IFE-STAR was more than a design challenge—it was an opportunity to craft a digital platform that reflects the magnitude of its mission: harnessing the power of the sun to revolutionize clean energy on Earth. As a pioneering initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, IFE-STAR represents a bold leap toward net-zero carbon emissions by developing inertial fusion energy (IFE). Our task was to translate this ambitious vision into an online presence that inspires collaboration, underscores urgency, and positions IFE-STAR as a global thought leader.
With no prior digital footprint, IFE-STAR needed more than just a website; they required a complete brand identity. Starting from scratch, we designed a logo inspired by the interplay of drifting laser cores and fusion reactions—a visual nod to the platform's
groundbreaking initiative. This logo became the cornerstone of a brand guideline document, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints. Every site element, from typography to interactive visuals, was meticulously designed to reflect IFE-STAR's innovative spirit.

This narrative informed every design and content decision, culminating in a site that bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and accessible communication.
The website experience opens with a striking visual: Earth suspended in a dynamic cosmic landscape, framed by the blazing sun—a powerful emblem of the quest to replicate its energy here on Earth.
The scroll-based storytelling seamlessly transitions from the celestial to the terrestrial, emphasizing humanity's role in this monumental endeavor. Leveraging webGL and adaptive video technologies, the site delivers a dynamic experience tailored to the user's bandwidth, ensuring an immersive journey regardless of device or connection speed.
A standout feature of the site is its interactive map, which pinpoints every lab, hub, and institution within the IFE-STAR network using actual GPS coordinates. Users can explore these facilities in real-time, filtering by partnership level and research focus. This map showcases the initiative's global reach and underscores the collaborative nature of fusion research. The map is powered by a robust administration panel and designed for easy updates as IFE-STAR's network expands.
The homepage delivers a powerful "wow" factor, drawing visitors into IFE-STAR's mission, while deeper pages present a meticulously organized repository of information about research areas, initiatives, and collaborative opportunities.
Accessibility was a key priority; the site's intuitive navigation and user-friendly design ensure that stakeholders—from scientists to policymakers—can easily engage with its content. Integrated features like a newsletter subscription further enhance user engagement, keeping audiences informed and connected.
Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with IFE-STAR's team to balance scientific accuracy with compelling storytelling. Our journey into the world of fusion energy was as much about learning as it was about creating, pushing us to refine our approach and messaging at every stage.
While our initial concept leaned toward making a mini-encyclopedia of fusion knowledge, the final design focused on fostering a sense of shared purpose and driving meaningful collaboration.
